GTA 6 Pre-Orders Hit 6.45 Million — $630 Million Before Launch

One month before launch, Grand Theft Auto VI has already pre-sold an estimated 6.45 million copies — roughly $630 million in revenue for a game nobody has played yet. Here is what those numbers actually mean, and what pre-ordering gets you.

In brief

  • The figure: Market intelligence firm Sensor Tower estimates GTA 6 has pre-sold 6.45 million digital copies as of October 20, generating roughly $630 million — a month before the November 19 launch.
  • The comparison: That pace is 148% ahead of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (2022), the previous digital pre-order record holder among the six years of data Sensor Tower compared — a set that includes Diablo 4, Hogwarts Legacy, and Spider-Man.
  • The split: 74% of pre-orders are on PlayStation 5 (about 4.8 million) versus 26% on Xbox Series X|S (about 1.66 million) — the clearest single data point in the console race in years.
  • The projection: Sensor Tower expects the bulk of pre-orders to land in the final week and says total prepurchases could reach 25 million — more than $2 billion before the game even releases.
  • The practicals: Pre-orders are open now on the PlayStation and Xbox stores and at major retailers. Digital pre-orders unlock pre-loading on November 12; the game itself unlocks November 19. Standard edition is $79.99, Ultimate $99.99.

Grand Theft Auto VI does not come out for another month. It has already made about $630 million.

That is the headline inside the headline of this week’s pre-order data, shared by market intelligence firm Sensor Tower and reported on October 20. As of that date, Rockstar had pre-sold an estimated 6.45 million digital copies of GTA 6 — the sequel to 2013’s GTA V, set in the Florida-inspired state of Leonida, and the most anticipated game release in at least a decade. The number is an estimate, not an official Rockstar figure, and it covers digital copies only. But even with those caveats, it is difficult to overstate what it signals.

What 6.45 million pre-orders actually means

The raw figure is a record. The comparison is the story.

Sensor Tower compiled digital pre-order data for the biggest game launches of the past six years — Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (2022), Diablo 4 (2023), Hogwarts Legacy (2023), and Marvel’s Spider-Man (2023). Modern Warfare 2 was the biggest of the group. GTA 6 is pacing 148% ahead of it over a comparable period before release, as reported by GamesIndustry.biz. That comparison is US digital only, so it understates the global picture — but the direction is unambiguous.

Put it in money terms. Analyst firm Piper Sandler previously estimated Rockstar could sell more than 45 million copies of GTA VI at launch. At the current average selling price implied by Sensor Tower’s numbers, Sensor Tower itself projects total prepurchases could reach 25 million copies — more than $2 billion in revenue — before the game has officially released. Rockstar would bank a record-breaking entertainment launch without a single midnight line.

And the launch window itself has become a dead zone for everyone else. Studios have been quietly shifting their own release schedules to avoid dropping games anywhere near GTA 6, according to reporting cited by TechSpot. When your competition’s strategy is “don’t be there,” the pre-order numbers stop being a curiosity and start being an industry event.

The 74/26 split is the real console-race story

Here is the figure worth sitting with: 74% of those 6.45 million pre-orders are for PlayStation 5. About 4.8 million copies. Xbox Series X|S accounts for 26% — roughly 1.66 million.

Nobody should be shocked that PlayStation leads; the PS5 has outsold the Xbox Series X|S by a wide margin this generation, and GTA has historically skewed PlayStation. But a nearly three-to-one ratio on the single biggest launch of the decade is the starkest public data point the console race has produced in years. For context on how lopsided that is: even in a generation Sony is clearly winning, a 74/26 split on a multiplatform title is extreme.

Xbox, for its part, says it is “very happy with GTA 6 preorder numbers,” per GameSpot — which is the kind of statement that tells you the company saw the split coming and priced it in. Xbox’s own ecosystem play is elsewhere anyway: the October Game Pass wave 2 additions, and which tiers actually get them. There is also a longer game being played: GameSpot notes a PC version could follow in early 2027, though that remains unconfirmed. If it lands, the platform math gets a third column — and a second sales spike.

Wait — are pre-orders actually open?

One piece of confusion is worth clearing up, because it has been circulating this week. At least one outlet claimed on October 20 that Rockstar “has not opened GTA 6 pre-orders,” pointing out that Rockstar never made a formal pre-order announcement and that its game page lists wishlisting rather than a purchase window.

That is technically true about the marketing beat and wrong about the practical reality. Digital pre-orders are live on the PlayStation Store and the Microsoft Store, and USA Today confirmed on October 15 that pre-orders are available at Amazon, Walmart, Target, Best Buy, GameStop, and QVC. Rockstar simply never turned the pre-order opening into an event — which, given that the game has pre-sold 6.45 million copies without one, may be the most confident marketing decision of the year. Don’t wait for an announcement; the window is already open.

What pre-ordering actually gets you

The practical question: is there any reason to pre-order now rather than on November 18? Yes — one, and it is about the download.

Rockstar has confirmed that digital pre-orders unlock pre-loading on November 12 at midnight local time. Pre-loading downloads and installs the full game but does not let you play early; the unlock comes on November 19. Because the pre-load opens at local midnight, players in Oceania and Asia get access first — Australia’s east coast hits the window at 1pm on November 11, ahead of the UK (midnight Nov 12) and the US East Coast (5am Nov 12).

Physical pre-orders have a catch worth knowing: the box contains a download code rather than a full game disc. Once you receive and redeem the code, you can pre-load from November 12 — but if the code arrives late, you can miss the pre-load window entirely. And on storage: Rockstar has not confirmed the final download size, but given the scale of the game, keeping 200 to 250 GB free is the sensible planning figure (that range is Dot Esports’ recommendation, not an official number).

The editions, per TechSpot’s reporting: $79.99 for the standard edition, $99.99 for the Ultimate Edition. There is also a $399.99 collector’s set — which, in a detail that tells you everything about the confidence behind this launch, does not actually include a copy of the game.

What this means for you

  • If you want to play at midnight on November 19, pre-order the digital edition and pre-load on November 12 — day-one downloads for a game this size will be brutal on congested servers.
  • Platform choice is made for you by the numbers: the 74/26 split means the multiplayer and community gravity — guides, crews, the eventual GTA Online successor — will overwhelmingly sit on PlayStation 5.
  • Don’t pay a premium for the collector’s set expecting the game — the $399.99 bundle is merchandise only, per current reporting. Buy the game separately.
  • Physical buyers: watch your delivery date. The box holds a download code, not a disc, and a late code means missing the pre-load window.
  • Waiting is also fine. Sensor Tower expects the biggest pre-order wave in the final week; nothing about the current data suggests sellouts or launch-day shortages for digital copies.
